Meet our latest Koala Joey, Snow!

WL Koala Joey Snow 1

We have welcome our latest (and last) koala joey of the season. Her name is Snow and she joins our furry family at Koala Rooftop. The name ‘Snow’ was picked by our Keepers after a Eucalyptus species called Snow Gum. Snow has incredibly light fur so it suits her perfectly!

Our new furry friend is now eight months old but she started venturing out of mum Scarlet’s pouch at 7 months. Some joeys aren't fully out of the pouch until they are over 8 months old, which makes Snow quite advanced for her age. Being the youngest means that sometimes she is being pushed around by other joeys trying to steal leaves - like sibling rivalry – but most of the time the joeys love to snuggle with her and her mum Scarlet!

Snow is experimenting with eating eucalyptus leaves, though will continue to stay with mum and supplement her diet with her milk until he is 12 months old.

Koala-Joey-Close-Up

Usually our koala joeys stay snuggled up with mum, getting their much-needed 20+ hours of sleep a day, but this little lady appears to be more interested in making friends, and can be found holding tight onto mum to catch a better glimpse of her visitors throughout the day.

The arrival of the new koala joey marks another successful year of koala breeding for WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, and will help to further educate the public on the need to protect the Australian-native species which is currently listed as vulnerable in the wild.

We have five adorable koala joeys that are now exploring life outside of their mum’s pouches and will be sure to delight guests.

These koala joeys won’t stay babies for long, so come and visit them today before they grow up!

Do Koalas Mate for Life?

It was previously believed that the most dominant male Koala was able to mate with all the females who would seek him out by his telltale call (bellow). However research has revealed that female koalas actually mate with a different male every year and the females identify new mating partners by their unique call or bellow.

Why are Baby Koalas Called Joeys?

These cuddly marsupials share their baby title with kangaroos, opossums, wallabies, and wombats. The word “joey” means “little animal” in the aboriginal language. Joey as a baby marsupial was first recorded in use in 1839
